Join us for an afternoon of poetry with the Powow River Poets! Readings are free, accessible, and open to the public. Come early to sign up for open mic!

The Powow River Poets, based in Newburyport, Massachusetts, are active promoters of poetry in New England.

The invited reader:

Richard Hoffman is author of the memoirs Half the House and Love & Fury; the poetry collections, Without Paradise; Gold Star Road, winner of the 2006 Barrow Street Press Poetry Prize and the 2008 Sheila Motton Award from the New England Poetry Club; Emblem; Noon until Night, winner of the 2018 Massachusetts Book Award for Poetry, and most recently, People Once Real. He is also author of the essay collection Remembering the Alchemists. A fiction writer as well, his Interference & Other Stories was published in 2009. He is Emeritus Writer-in-Residence at Emerson College.

The Powow River Poet reader:

Robert Whelan is the Poet Laureate of Rockport, MA, and Powow River poet since 2022. He is widely published in anthologies and journals in the US, Europe and Asia. His poems have been translated into multiple languages. In 2022 Bob was awarded a Silver Medal at the Noussa International Poetry Festival in Noussa, Greece. This November 2024 Bob’s work will be included in the Lunar Codex and launched as part of a NASA mission to the Moon’s surface.  Believing poetry is best as spoken word, he frequents open mics in Boston, New England and internationally. Every month he hosts the Rockport Open Mic on Zoom as well as the Gloucester Writers Center Open Mic. Bob organizes and presents the annual Rockport International Poetry Festival, which will celebrate its 7th anniversary in April 2025. Info at RockportPoetry.com
