Chocolate and the Environment (IN-PERSON)

Tuesday, February 66:00—7:00 PMProgram RoomNewburyport Public LibraryNewburyport Public Library, 94 State Street, Newburyport, MA, 01950

Come learn about chocolate and the environment; you may even get to taste some chocolate!

Cocoa Beantown, a Boston-based chocolate education and experiences company, spreads the love of chocolate through a variety of cocoa-centric neighborhood walking tours, tasting and pairing events, socials, classes and educational lectures, to folks from around the Hub and beyond, bringing smiles to the faces of chocoholics from 19 months to 99 years old. Cocoa Beantown is also a frequent collaborator and trusted partner of the Fine Cacao and Chocolate Institute.

With concerns about climate change increasing by the day, cacao producers around the world are working to ensure their farms survive the changing growing seasons. Likewise, small batch chocolate makers find themselves a surprisingly large piece of the puzzle–supporting farmers by purchasing beans that were farmed in a sustainable way and employing their own green practices to chocolate production, packaging, and delivery chains. We’ll also talk about the fabled history of the Arhuacos, an indigenous tribe in the Sierra Nevada region of Colombia that considers themselves stewards of the environment, and have raised cacao for over 500 years.
