The Pre-Raphaelites were a reformist group of artists from the United Kingdom who challenged the paradigms of Classicism. For centuries, the High Renaissance art of Raphael was regarded as the preeminent academic painting tradition throughout Europe. While the work of the Pre-Raphaelite artists may seem traditionalist to the modern eye, in their time this band of painters were considered anti-academician and rebellious.

The original Pre-Raphaelites were referred to as the “Brotherhood," however, in the second wave of artists that followed, there were a few women who joined the movement. For the month of May, we will focus on the following four Pre-Raphaelites: John Everett Millais, John William Waterhouse, and two great women painters that are often overlooked by art historians, Marie Spartali Stillman, and Eleanor Fortescue-Brickdale.
