Join the monthly Art History Group!

We will review the life and work of one artist each month, and discuss the movements that they contributed to. No prior knowledge of art history or the artist of the month is necessary. This group meets in-person on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 3 PM.

Ramon Casas (1866-1932) was a Catalan painter, graphic designer, illustrator and caricaturist, who helped usher in Modernism to his native Catalonia. At the age of 15, he moved to Paris where he was influenced by the work of Manet, Degas, and Toulouse-Lautrec. He excelled as a draftsman and developed a uniquely expressive drawing technique. Returning to Spain, he completed his studies in Madrid and Granada. Casas’ paintings became known as the benchmark of the modernist movement in Catalonia, and he was soon one of the most sought-after figurative painters in Europe.

For the month of January, we will begin by discussing the Modernist movement and its defining characteristics, before examining the brilliant draftsmanship of the great Ramon Casas.
