Join the monthly Art History Group!

We will review the life and work of one artist each month, and discuss the movements that they contributed to. No prior knowledge of art history or the artist of the month is necessary. This group meets in-person on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 3 PM.

One of Lebanon’s most revered modernist painters, Shafic Abboud’s (1926-2004) oeuvre is deeply rooted in nostalgia, homesickness, and the Lebanese story-telling tradition. Abboud studied at the Académie Libanaise des Beaux-Arts in Lebanon before moving to Paris, where he would remain for the rest of his life. His early canvases were expressionistic figurative work, which naturally evolved into the large-scale abstract paintings that he is renowned for today.

An introduction to the history of abstract art and the abstract expressionist movement will lead us to examine the vibrant canvases of Shafic Abboud. The lecture will be supplemented with commentary from interviews with his daughter, Christine Abboud.
