Join the monthly Art History Group!

We will review the life and work of one artist each month, and discuss the movements that they contributed to. No prior knowledge of art history or the artist of the month is necessary. This group meets in-person on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 3 PM.

Known as the “Painter of Melancholy,” Czech artist Jakub Schikaneder (1855-1924) would most often paint his subjects in evening light, masterfully capturing the subtle nuances of color at dusk. Among his notable works are also nocturnes of Prague, painted with a delicate, soft application.

Schikaneder was born into an artistic family and went on to attend the Academy of Arts in Prague. He was strongly influenced by the Romantic movement, and greatly admired Caspar David Friedrich and his allegorical landscapes. Yet, Schikaneder would ultimately create a style that was uniquely his own, while drawing from the revolutionary ideas of his time; including, Romanticism, Realism, Symbolism, and Impressionism.

For our first meeting of the new year, we will begin by discussing Romanticism, then walk the streets of old Prague through the poetic and contemplative works of Jakub Schikaneder.
