Join the monthly Art History Group!

We will review the life and works of one artist each month, and discuss the movements that they contributed to. No prior knowledge of art history or the artist of the month is necessary. This group meets in-person on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 3 PM.

Fritz Scholder (1937-2005) was a Native American artist working in the Pop Art tradition. He was a pupal of the celebrated Bay Area artist Wayne Thiebaud (1920-2021), who exposed him to the Pop Art movement and helped organize his early exhibitions. Scholder was from the Luiseño Native American community (California), but did not consider his work to be “Indian art.” However, he used his voice to challenge stereotypical representations of Native Americans, and was highly influential in not only shedding light on the Native experience, but providing a channel for the artistic expression of fellow indigenous artists. His work would raise critical questions about cultural identity and representation of Native peoples.

For the month of July, we will begin by reviewing the Pop Art movement and its ability to question social norms, then survey Scholder’s bold, bright compositions, fueled with satire and cultural contradiction.
