Join the monthly Art History Group!

We will review the life and works of one artist each month, and discuss the movements that they contributed to. No prior knowledge of art history or the artist of the month is necessary. This group meets in-person on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 3 PM.

French artist Séraphine Louis (1864-1942) is best known for her compositions of jewel-like, imaginary florae. Deeply inspired by her religious faith, after spending twenty years as a lay sister at a convent in northern France, she left to pursue her passion for art. Séraphine was largely self-taught and one of “The Sacred Heart Painters” along with the likes of Henri Rousseau (1844-1910). She was the only female artist to have her works displayed at the first Naïve Art Exhibition in Paris in 1928.

We will begin by discussing the movements of “Primitivism” and “Naïve Art,” then examine Séraphine Louis’ extraordinary bouquets just in time for the summer, painted free-spiritedly and with utmost devotion.
